Y at the end of a word is more common than people expect, and because Y often acts as a vowel, a confirmed final Y tells you a lot about the word's sound and shape.
Common five-letter -Y words
- DAILY, DAISY, DUSTY, MUSTY, NASTY
- HAPPY, FUNNY, SUNNY, BERRY, JOLLY
- CRAZY, DIZZY, FUZZY, JAZZY
- EARLY, NEWLY, LOFTY, MERRY
Y as a vowel
When a word ends in Y and you're short on vowels elsewhere, the Y is probably doing vowel duty. That changes which letters you expect in the middle — often a consonant-heavy core like DUSTY or CRAZY.
Watch for double letters
A lot of -Y words double a middle consonant: HAPPY, FUNNY, JOLLY, BERRY. If your clues stop adding up, test whether a letter repeats before the Y.
