Double-Letter Words That Catch Players Out — PuzzleDaily

One of the most common ways to lose a word game is forgetting that letters can repeat. Your clues stop making sense, and the answer was doubling a letter all along.

Words that double up

  • SPEED, GREED, CREEP, SLEEP — double E
  • ABBEY, HOBBY, BOBBY — double B
  • MELEE, GEESE, MOOSE — repeated vowels
  • ALLOY, JELLY, FUNNY, HAPPY — double consonants

When to suspect a double

If you've confirmed several letters but can't make a word, ask whether one of them appears twice. Vowels double more often than people expect — EE in particular.

A quick test

In count-based games, a repeated letter can skew the numbers in confusing ways. When the math feels off, deliberately try a word with a doubled letter and watch how the count responds.
